John Baptiste has no doubt that an addiction to online gambling killed his wife. He doesn?t blame the Internet, but he would like people to be aware of the dangers?

According to a report in the San Jose Daily Review (USA), Baptiste and his wife, Debi, moved to San Jose in 1999, about a year after they were married.
The move was inspired mainly by his desire to put some distance between Debi and the video-poker bars in Oregon to which she had become addicted, said Baptiste. ?Debi was a compulsive gambler.?

All went well for a time ? until the purchase of a new home computer introduced a new element to Debi?s addiction. Online casinos become her new obsession, said Baptiste. ?I had to cut her off from the computer after she lost $10 000.?
He changed their passwords, but Debi responded by gambling at work. Eventually her husband became so fed up that he filed for divorce. Debi committed suicide the same day.

It was only two weeks later, said the Daily Review, when the credit-card bills started arriving and he found out just how much money his wife had lost.

?From August to September 2000, she lost another $10 000. Some of that came from her own paychecks and some from our joint savings account. About $4 000 came from computers bought with bad cheques and returned to the store for cash.
?Sometimes I think that if I hadn't bought that computer, none of this would have happened. It's not that the Internet is bad, but it can be dangerous for people who can't control themselves.?
