"I have been a fan of me ever since." - Tom Kaulitz
The Tokio Hotel guitarist's tongue-in-cheek statement sums up what 'Tokio Hotel TV Caught On Camera!' unequivocally is ? a hefty, self-gratifying pat on the back for the German rock foursome.
The 70-minute DVD captures the band?s meteoric rise to fame, chronicling months spent jetting around the world to please fans in Tel Aviv, Paris, Cannes, Munich, Montreal, Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, Lisbon, Mexico and Geneva ? to name but a few ? with live performances of epic proportions, including their feat at the 2007 MTV European Music Awards, which saw them perform under a deluge of orchestrated rain to wow the unsuspecting Munich masses.
Spliced in amongst the copious amounts of footage of the audacious outfit on tour are episodic snippets of 'Tokio Hotel TV' ? the group?s dedicated Youtube channel ? including clips of bassist Georg Listing and drummer Gustav Schafer?s endeavours on a climbing wall and lead singer Bill Kaulitz?s disjointed stint in a supermarket ? all of it far from thrilling viewing.
The concept of filming the band while they view the original draft of the DVD, re-edit and release it with their insight (and lack thereof) included in the final product is relatively original, but that?s about as good as it gets from an objective, subtitle-grateful critic?s point of view.
Entertainment value is low but the release is enough of a gimmick to leave fanatical viewers feeling appreciated and needed by the Kaulitz twins, Listing and Schafer.
At the risk of milking cliche ? 'Tokio Hotel TV Caught On Camera!' really is a package for the ardent fans and those unfamiliar with the Magdeburg-bred quartet should stay well away.
