'A Fool in Love' is Florence Rawlings debut album and is very much a continuation of her bluesy, jazz and country style first single, 'The Only Woman in the World', which drew mixed reviews.
Like the single, the album is a reflection of her rather quirky, slightly subdued presentation. She clearly is working on developing a style of her own, though at this stage it is not likely to have wide appeal and quite frankly there is not much here to get excited about.
Signed to Dramatico Records (which made a name for itself with artists such as Katie Melua, Marianne Faithfull and Carla Bruni who also rose from relative obscurity to fame and fortune), the 20-year-old does repeats of good tunes such as Allen Toussaint?s 'Riverboat', Ike Turner?s 'A Fool in Love' and Chuck Berry?s 'Can?t Catch Me', but without giving them fresh legs.
In fact, her way of doing it falls far short of the originals.
There are 12 songs in this collection, including 'The Only Woman in the World', but none of them really rise above the underwhelming.
In spite of contrary noises made by publicists Ms Rawlings has only got one foot on the long and steep ladder to glitz and neon lights.
