It seems there are a few rock fans easily put off by a front woman.
Now, before the eyes begin to roll, this has nothing to do with feminism. The world has simply become accustomed to men leading their favourite bands. Let's face it, the number of front men in the world significantly outweighs bona fide female lead singers. You've got Amy Lee, Alison Mosshart, Brody Dalle, and? Hayley Williams. The rest are solo artists and not rock chicks at all.
If you manage to look past the fiery red hair, punk clothes, and the fact that she's only 21, what is noticeable about Hayley Williams is her heartfelt honesty and maturity.
She, as well as the rest of the band members, is candid about their problems. If you've seen their DVD, 'The Final Riot!', you will understand the internal difficulties Paramore has faced and how challenging it was for these five young musicians to get past in-fighting and personal issues.
The band was close to calling it a day last year, before they decided to work on 'Brand New Eyes', and this time around, the Tennessee rockers let go and tried to enjoy recording the new album, despite intense pressure after the success of their 2007 release 'Riot!', and, of course, the Twilight theme song, 'Decode'. (Don't worry Twilighters, 'Decode' is included on this album as a bonus track.)
According to Paramore, 'Brand New Eyes' was about looking at things from a different perspective, hence the title of the album. They knew they needed to step it up, and it appears the hard work has paid off.
'Brand New Eyes' debuted at number one in five countries and has been topping the charts ever since.
In between the catchy guitar-riff-drum-beat tracks, 'Ignorance', 'Brick By Boring Brick', 'Careful', and 'Where The Lines Overlap', there are few powerful tracks that speak much louder than the singles do.
'The Only Exception', 'Playing God', 'All I Wanted', and 'Misguided Ghosts', need to be heard and appreciated, both musically and lyrically.
However, the song that speaks the loudest on this album, purely because of its likeness to Paramore's mindset during the recording process, is 'Looking Up'. As Williams sings, "God knows the world doesn't need a band, but what a waste it would've been, I can't believe we almost hung it up, we're just getting started," it becomes pretty clear where the band's mind is at now.
It can be said with utmost certainty that they did it. Paramore succeeded in topping 'Riot!' 100%.
