One wonders what Kurt Cobain would have thought of Foo Fighters. It's difficult to imagine him smiling while his dirty, grunge drummer 'sells-out' to the commercial rock market. Call it whatever you want, it was just as well frontman Dave Grohl didn't decide to call it a day after the demise of Nirvana ? because that would have been a damn shame.
Releasing a Greatest Hits album is dodgy business, and often leaves fans suspicious and worried. 'Doesn't the band have anything new to record?' 'Is this it?' And you have every right to be sceptical. Sometimes it can be a bizarre, and slightly dim-witted move, like Fall Out Boy's premature decision to release theirs late last year. However, it's safe to say, after six albums, it's time for a Foo Fighters Best Of.
As a fan, you probably have most, if not all of the band albums already. From the later singles like 'The Pretender' (Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace) to earlier tracks like 'Learn To Fly', (There Is Nothing Left To Lose) the Seattle rockers have managed to create something extra-collectable with this album. Unlike Fall Out Boy, the album comes complete with unreleased tracks and a DVD of all their music videos, as well as various live performances, including 'All My Life' live at Wembley.
Whether you love them or hate them, think they're commercial or generic, it's difficult to deny their rock 'n' roll prowess. After swapping band members more than a teenager swaps spit, this Foo Fighters play list proves the drama has been worth it. Minus the Rascal Flats-like 'Wheels', you can expect a few gems in and amongst the straight-out chart-topping singles, including the unreleased 'Word Forward', and an acoustic version of the renowned 'Everlong'.
As Grohl says in the album insert, 'These 16 songs are what we're calling our "Greatest Hits". Not to be confused with "Our Best Songs" or "Our Favourite Song", it is a collection of the songs that have defined our band's identity to most people over the years. The other 65 album tracks? well, some of those might be our greatest songs? depends on whom you ask. Personally, I don't think we've written our greatest songs yet. But that door is always open.'
So, stop frowning. Take a breath. It seems there's more on the way, and that's something to look forward to.
