Method Man has been arrested for tax evasion.
According to a press release from the district attorney's office in New York's Staten Island, the Wu-Tang Clan rapper was arrested yesterday for failing to pay almost R251 364 in personal income taxes, reports MTV.com.
Method Man (whose real name is Clifford Smith) reportedly turned himself into the Stanten Island police where he was later charged with two counts of tax evasion.
If he's found guilty the rapper could face up to four years in jail.
The most serious charge Method Man faces is a felony violation of repeated failure to file personal income and earnings tax. He was also given a misdemeanor failure to pay tax charge.
The rapper was first investigated when he'd failed to pay personal taxes dating back to 2004 through to 2007, which amounted to R249 833.
He's also on the hook for accrued interest and penalties stemming from the back taxes.
Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan said: "Taxes are a burden that all citizens share in a civil society, whether you're an average Joe on the street or a high-profile rap artist."
"Because of the alleged action of people like Mr. Smith, law abiding citizens face higher taxes and reduced government services," he said.
The rapper will be represented by Peter Frankel and a court date is yet to be set for the case.
