Mariah Carey is set to be honoured for her acting skills at the 21st Palm Springs International Film Festival in January.

Her role as a make-up-free social worker in the new movie 'Precious' was enough to impress the award organisers who plan to give the singer a Breakthrough Performance Award, reports Contact Music.

Carey will receive the award at the Palm Springs Convention Centre on 5 January 2010.

Previous stars to receive the award include Freida Pinto of 'Slumdog Millionaire' fame and Oscar winners Jennifer Hudson and Marion Cotillard.
