Around 3000 workers at a factory in south China owned by global lingerie giant Triumph International have gone on strike over low pay, bonuses and vacation demands, state media reported on Friday.
The employees ? all women ? stopped work on Wednesday at the Hainan Youmei Underwear Company in Haikou, capital of southern Hainan island, the official Xinhua news agency said.
"The strike started after... a rule said that workers whose average efficiency at the end of 2009 was over 50 percent would get their annual performance bonus," employee Mo Xiaohui was quoted as saying.
But "this year, the firm's results were not good, and most workers' efficiency might not reach 50 percent, so it's obvious that this rule reduces our end-of-year bonus," she said.
According to Xinhua, Triumph International set up the firm as a wholly-owned subsidiary in 1992. Mo was quoted as saying that workers took home a salary of 500 to 600 yuan (73 to 88 dollars) a month, and the bonus came to 700 yuan.
The board has now agreed to pay all workers their bonus, but the employees decided to continue the strike over their other demands, Han Lirong, head of the firm's union, was quoted as saying.
The workers have also asked that the company raise wages to the minimum national standard and provide employees with normal leave, the report said.
An official at the human resources department of the firm, who would only give her surname as Guo, said she had been told not to speak to the media.
Huang Xueyan, the company's human resources manager, said an official from the firm's headquarters was flying to Hainan to try to resolve the dispute, according to Xinhua.
