It's virtually waterproof, can be read in bright sunlight and will always keep you on track. It?s also finally something that the four-wheel crowd cannot have.
What we're referring to is the Harley-Davidson Roadtech Zumo 660, a GPS system from Garmin in partnership with Harley that is a customised motorcycle navigation system designed specifically for use in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
It has a custom handlebar mount, controls are glove-friendly and the design is robust. The 4.3-inch touch screen is easily readable in sunlight and the whole unit is waterproof to IPX7 standard.
An IPX7 rating means the GPS case can withstand accidental immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. An IPX8 designation is for continuous underwater use.
The Zumo is pre-loaded with maps and has a Harley-Davidson database that points riders to their nearest dealer. Favourite routes can be easily shared with the global community. No more follow-the-leader, boys.
Harley-Davidson Europe specialist for parts, accessories and biker clothing, Nicola Francis, said the Zumo and Harley?s partnership with Garmin are a natural fit because "our riders relish the freedom and exhilaration that riding a Harley brings". She said the device broadens and enhances possibilities for exploration and discovery.
The unit has advanced lane guidance, which means this portable satnav ensures the rider is in the correct lane. Three-dimensional mapping of buildings and integrated speakers make navigation even clearer.
Riders can co-ordinate rallies and meetings on the go using its Bluetooth function.
A high sensitivity receiver ensures excellent navigation coverage, whether in forests, among tall buildings or on a desert track. An SD card slot also allows the map database to be expanded or the addition of features such as language guides, topographic cartography or the Good Pub Guide.
The device also has an integrated speaker and a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery for up to 5 hours use - handy for navigating by foot or route planning while downing a cold one in the bar.
The Road Tech Zumo 660 will be available from November 2009 at authorised Harley-Davidson dealers. To find your local dealer visit www.harley-davidson.com/africa
