Think there's nothing exciting to see on the roads? A veritable fleet of supercars, bought by the country's well-heeled motoring enthusiasts last month, are out there now.

South Africa's rich (and very likely famous) motoring enthusiasts didn't let the gloomy mood of the past year bog them down at the start of 2010.

They engaged in some retail therapy at Aucor's supercar auction on Saturday 27 February, where the bidding pushed a number of vehicles above the R1-million threshold.

Topping the million rand mark were:

  • Bentley Continental GT 2006 - R1.4m
  • Bentley Continental GT 2008 - R1.2m
  • Lamborghini Gallardo Spider 2006 - R1.75m
  • Lamborghini Gallardo E-Gear 2004 - R1.2m
  • Ferrari 612 Scaglietti 2005 - R1.3m

Aucor managing director Shannon Winterstein said: "With late clearances we had over 130 lots on auction and we had a fantastic day with keen bidding from a number of buyers."

Also on the list of sports cars in demand were a 2004 Porsche GT3, sold for R650 000 and a 2007 Maserati Gransport V8, which attracted a bid of R500 000.

Top end SUV's - such as a 2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S sold for R675 000 - 4x4s and bakkies were also sought after by buyers, proving that South Africa should not be discounted from the countries with a fine motoring heritage.

Winterstein said the advantage of a supercar auction is that it gives buyers "an opportunity to name their price to own a car of their dreams".
