Canada's Marty Roth and Buddy Lazier, the 1996 Indianapolis 500 winner, withstood the last hectic minutes of final qualifying Sunday to secure starting spots in the 92nd Indianapolis 500.
Mexico's Mario Dominguez crashed in a final attempt to claim a berth in the 33-car field for next Sunday's race, leaving Roth in the back of the lineup as the slowest qualifier, the "man on the bubble", at 218.965mph (350.344km/h).
"I preferred to do it on lap times," Roth said. "Being on the bubble gets worse and worse. It's just fantastic it's over and we're in the show."
Dominguez was unharmed but disappointed to fall short of a berth which had been in his hands briefly.
"I really feel terrible I could not qualify for this race," Dominguez said. "The only thing that makes me feel good is we tried to the end. We gave it everything we could."
A.J. Foyt IV, Lazier and Roth filled the back-row spots after the bumping process ended, Foyt replacing Roger Yasukawa on the inside of the 11th row while Lazier and Roth kept positions from Saturday but only after faster runs.
Foyt crashed his qualified car in practice, but only after safely qualifying at 219.184mph. Roth requalified after being bumped out, leaving Yasukawa to be knocked out by Dominguez, who only managed to leave himself on the bubble.
Yasukawa tried to bump out Dominguez and was even on speed with a lap to go but failed by .04 of a second over a four-lap qualifying run at the 2.5-mile (4km) Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.Eastern Conference
That set the stage for US veteran Lazier to bump his way back into the lineup for his 16th Indy 500 start with a four-lap run of 219.017mph, sending Dominguez out with less than 10 minutes remaining and putting Roth on the spot.
"We were close to not making the race," a tearful Lazier said. "It was just by a hair. It was very emotional."
Italy's Max Papis was undone by technical troubles and Yasukawa made another run that was too slow, setting the stage for Dominguez's crash.
"I feel bad for everybody that didn't make the race," Lazier said. "It was tough out there. We gave everything we had. Hopefully we will be faster in the race."
New Zealand's Scott Dixon is on the pole for the race at 226.366mph.
