Subaru's new Legacy and Outback XUV (crossover utility vehicle) are ready to roam the local roads. These 'combo-cars' give Subaru a unique offering in the premium sedan and luxury wagon markets.

The key elements of these two models remains unique: the combination of all-wheel-drive and a boxer engine for perfectly-balanced handling and - in the case of the Outback ? added height for an on- and off-road capability.

Head and heart

Subaru Southern Africa brand and marketing manager Grant Bowring explains: "The Legacy is a sedan which meets all of those requirements but adds in a decidedly sporty bent, making it a car which can be bought with both the head and the heart to providing a tantalising alternative to the establishment.

"The Outback on the other hand, provides the versatility and practicality of a wagon along with real on- and off-road ability; and thanks to the low centre of gravity of the boxer engine and symmetrical all wheel drive, [it provides] this dual-purpose role without the compromise normally associated with SUV-type vehicles."

The Legacy is available in three variants with a choice of two engines: a two-litre rated at 110kW and 196Nm and a 2.5-litre engine that delivers 123kW and 229Nm. Two Outback derivatives are available, both with the 2.5-litre engine.

Bigger and leaner

Subaru says it has reduced fuel consumption of the range by up to 11 percent in some cases. The Legacy 2.5i Lineartronic combined cycle consumption is now 8.4l/100km compared to a previous 9.3 l/100km. A larger fuel tank, increased to 65 litres, means these Scoobies can go much further before having to fill up.

There's more cabin space, particularly in the back row and the models are true five-seaters. A slightly longer body offers more room for luggage.

The new line-up is as follows:

Legacy 2.0i Premium ? with the choice of a six-speed manual transmission or Lineartronic CVT, leather trim, power driver?s front seat with memory function, electric sunroof and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Legacy 2.5i Sport Premium CVT ? adds dual front electric seats, carbonfibre dash inserts, alloy pedals, sports front bumper and grille; Bilstein suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels and Xenon headlights with incorporated washers.

Outback 2.5i Premium ? with the choice of a six-speed manual transmission or Lineartronic CVT, leather trim, power driver's front seat with memory function, electric sunroof and 17 inch alloy wheels and rear air vents.
