Chery is taking on the hatchback market with the introduction of two new models that it claims are a super package.
Chery SA managing director Brett Soso says the J1 range has not compromised specification or safety to keep the price low.
The two models ? the J1 1.3 TE and the higher-specification J1 1.3TX ? have power steering, air conditioning, alloy wheels and critical safety items such as dual airbags and ABS with electronic brake distribution.
The five-seater makes the most of its dimensions to provide maximum cabin and luggage space. It is powered by a fuel-injected, 1.3-litre petrol engine developed by Chery.
The four-cylinder Acteco engine, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission, puts out maximum power of 61kW at 6000rpm and 114Nm of torque between 3800 and 4 500rpm. Claimed average fuel consumption is 6.7l/100km.
Chery says the J1 has undergone "extensive evaluations" in South Africa to ensure its durability and quality under local operating conditions.
City driving or negotiating narrow roads should be simple with the J1's turning circle of 4.75m.
There's not much information available on the cabin but Chery says it is "aesthetically pleasing while also being fashionable, giving a more upmarket feel". At least we know that all the seats can be manually adjusted and the sound system has a USB port so you an plug in a compatible MP3 player.
Oh, that and the fact that the J1 1.3 TX electric windows and electric mirrors.
