BMW designers are on a roll ? they're creating cars that fit practical commuting requirements as well as giving the driver a spine-tingling and emotional driving experience.

Looks can be deceiving, the question of whether the aggressive yet civilised looking M Sport Package 530i would live up to these high expectations begged to be answered.

In typical BMW fashion the 530i is powered by an inline six-cylinder motor, driving through the rear wheels.

But huge technological advances have been made in the engine department. BMW makes use of their new-generation six-cylinder (NG6) engine, a revolutionary step in motor manufacture. Engineers have used a composite magnesium and aluminium construction to reduce weight and increase performance and economy. Power has been raised from 170kW in its predecessor to an impressive 190kW, while engine weight has been timmed by 10kg and consumption figures now measure 8.8 Litres/100km.

The weight loss theme is carried throughout the car with an aluminium front-end structure and the use of aluminium in the suspension components.

Sitting in the car one initially feels dwarfed by the high waistline of the business-class BMW, but adjustments to the electronically-operated seats make it possible to overcome this overwhelmin feeling and take charge.

The M Sports seats support with race-like intention, while the padded leather steering wheel frames the simple circular gauges. Leather, wood and aluminium round out a refined interior. No frills are necessary to make the driving experience a pleasurable one.

Although a new direction in engine design, the NG6 engine maintains the characteristic BMW tone as it launches off the line and revs freely up to the increased 7000rpm limit. Short direct gear changes allow for the revs to be maintained and the large car to propel itself forward at an impressive rate.

Although the acceleration is notable, it is the handling and road holding that grab attention.

Direct steering is relayed through the 18-inch wheels and tyres, any steering input immediately impacts on the relationship between the tarmac and the car. Feedback is positive as the car grips, squats and blasts out of corners in a sublime manner, inspiring confidence in the car and thrilling the senses.

As expected the 530i soaks up bumps and road noise, cocooning the cockpit and making for the classy ride one would expect from a luxury sedan of this pedigree. No unnecessary frills have been added to the well laid out spacious interior. A no fuss dash layout displays all the necessary information for the driver and makes operation a pleasure.

While the M Sport package brings a bit of "boy racer" to the BMW party, the additional aerodynamics, 18-inch wheels, anthracite roof lining and other interior modifications are not overboard, the car remains a luxury sedan. BMW have successfully combined the thrill of driving a performance vehicle with the style and comfort of a luxury car.
