2019 Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz Opening Night Battle Of The Big Bands

Standard Bank Joy of Jazz

The 22nd edition of South Africa’s not to
be missed Jazz Festival – Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, is set to premier
with a remarkable  big band performance  on 26 September 2019, at the
Sandton Convention Centre.

The one-night only spectacle will feature the JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER
ORCHESTRA – JLCO (a 15-piece band made up of the finest soloists,
ensemble players and arranger in the jazz music) with the
internationally acclaimed musician, trumpeter, composer and band leader
WYNTON MARSALIS, and ZAR JAZZ ORCHESTRA boasting a 17-piece band led by
trumpeter MARCUS WYATT.  They will look to redefine swing when the two
big bands battle it out on Dinaledi Stage.

Mantwa Chinoamadi, Executive Producer at TMusicman says, “Music lovers
are in for a treat. We are excited about this year’s Standard Bank Joy
of Jazz. We want our festival patrons to not only experience the music,
but to also live it. The battle of big bands night will have
extraordinary musicians share a stage, showcasing their swing prowess,
while entertaining audiences. We assure jazz and music lovers an
extraordinary experience, that will remain in their memories for many
years to come.”

The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival remains South Africa’s most
authentic annual international jazz festival with a dazzling programme
from opening to closing night.

For 35 years Standard Bank has supported the arts with one of the most
recognisable prizes in the country – the Standard Bank Young Artist
Award, given to the nation’s most promising creatives in theatre, dance,
music, art, film, performance art and jazz. The list of SBYA winners for
Jazz reads as a who’s who of the most interesting directions our
country’s jazz has taken in the past three decades and the STANDARD BANK
YOUNG ARTIST 35TH YEAR CELEBRATION thus reminds Standard Bank Joy of
Jazz audiences of some of those winners, such as Sibongile Khumalo,
Concord Nkabinde, Shannon Mowday, Kesivan Naidoo and Bokani Dyer who
will be part of the band that will also perform on Dinaledi Stage on
opening night of this year’s festival.

“Our support of the arts in general and jazz in particular, reaches new
heights this year as we not only celebrate 21 years of partnership with
the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, but also 35 years of the
Standard Bank Young Artist Awards (SBYA).  At this year’s festival, the
two milestones collide with incredible performances by leading SBYA
alumni on multiple festival stages. We look forward to how we will come
together to share our #AfricanheART with the world” Desiree Pooe – Head
of Group Sponsorships at Standard Bank.
