4 Gauteng Police Officers To Appear In Court For Murder

Four Gauteng police officers face a charge of murder and two of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with the death of a suspect who was in custody.

On Wednesday morning, they are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates court on the east of Johannesburg.

They are accused of beating the suspect to death. He had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.  Two other suspects who were arrested with the deceased survived the assault.

Moses Dlamini from the police watchdog – IPID says, “The suspects who were arrested on the 18th of March are two sergeants and two constables. The incident happened in Katlehong North. Ipid investigators attended a crime scene of a death as a result of police action on the 10th of March in Katlehong North. The matter was reported initially as a death in police custody at Thelle Mogoerane hospital. However investigations showed the men were in fact assaulted by these police officers.”
