Tiger Brands To Fight Listeria Class Action

South Africa’s leading food producer Tiger Brands said on Wednesday it will fight a class action lawsuit over its role in the world’s largest ever listeria outbreak. The listeriosis outbreak, the infection killed more than 200 people in South Africa last year and was traced back to a factory run by Tiger Brands-owned Enterprise Foods.

Alex Shutdown Movement

The Alexandra Total Shutdown Movement says it will give an intergovernmental forum appointed to deal with challenges in the township its full support. The protest conveners are expected to meet with the forum headed by Cooperative Governance Minister Zweli Mkhize on Wednesday. President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed the team to attend to the needs of residents who took to the streets over a lack of services in the area.

7 Cape Town Clinics Recognised For Service Delivery

Seven more City of Cape Town health clinics have recently scooped platinum status for service delivery. Kasselsvlei, Kuyasa and Eerste River Clinics are among the seven healthcare facilities across the metro which scored best when assessed under the National Ideal Clinic Framework. Sixty-three other facilities have already received this recognition.

Nkoana Mashabane Ordered To Appear Before Court In Land Claims Matter

The Western Cape High Court has ordered Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane to appear before court on 17 May 2019 in a matter involving a group of District Six land claimants. Hundreds of former District Six residents are seeking answers from the state on when restitution in the form of land will be delivered to them.

ANC Denies Knowledge Of SABC Debate Between Ramaphosa, Maimane

The African National Congress (ANC) has denied that its President Cyril Ramaphosa will participate in a debate with Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). On Tuesday, Maimane confirmed receiving a formal invitation to be part of The Big Debate’s official presidential debate to be held 10 days before the polls.

SA Headline Consumer Inflation Rises To 4.5%

South Africa’s headline consumer inflation accelerated to 4.5% year-on-year in March – from 4.1% in February. Statistics SA said on a month-on-month basis, prices rose 0.8%, the same rate as in the previous month. Core inflation – which excludes the prices of food, non-alcoholic beverages, petrol and energy – was 0.7% month-on-month – slowing from 1.1%.

South African Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya has been named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2019. Semenya features in the icons category alongside Taylor Swift, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga and Spike Lee.

DA Unfazed By De Lille Court Action Threat

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has brushed off Patricia de Lille’s threat of dragging them to the Electoral Court. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) ordered the DA to apologise to De Lille for claiming that she was fired from her position as Cape Town mayor. De Lille is now approaching the Electoral Court with her own case.
