The Head of the North West Health Department Dr Thabo Lekalakala is facing serious charges before a disciplinary hearing in Mahikeng on Monday.
He has to answer to alleged procurement irregularities related to the Gupta-linked company Mediosa.
The Mediosa mobile clinics made headlines last year after it emerged that the company was paid 30-million-rand before it rendered services. The company also allegedly paid for a trip to India for Lekalakala, his wife and friend, apparently to go and view the mobile clinics. The incident was heavily criticised by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.
Lekalakala was suspended but he challenged the suspension in court last year and won. The provincial Health Department has since terminated its contract with Mediosa. Spokesperson for the North West Premier, Vuyisile Ngesi says: “ He’s charged with misrepresentation, as it was previously reported that in his CV, he had stated that he’d been a chief director at the national department. Secondly, he’s being charged with procurement irregularities, in relation to the Mediosa contract.”
