Annual Cape Town Funny Festival at the Baxter Theatre
July 9, 2018 - August 5, 2018
HER MAJESTY FOR CAPE TOWN – THE JIVE CAPE TOWN FUNNY FESTIVAL
Her Majesty the Queen of England pays a month-long visit to the Mother City in July, where she will officially open the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival delivered by Turkish Airlines. The popular Festival, now in its fourteenth year, runs from 9 July – 5 August at the Baxter Theatre.
Her Majesty’s impersonator, Australian actor and comedian, Gerry Connolly, travels the world officially opening major events as Her Majesty. He will attend every performance of the Festival.
The Jive Cape Town Funny Festival has become Cape Town’s Winter comedic tonic and is well known for presenting top class, international variety acts on the same stage as South Africa’s top comics. The official line-up of local performers includes Master of Ceremony, Alan Committie, Marc Lottering, Tats Nkonzo, Rob van Vuuren, Khanyisa Bunu and Siv Ngesi.
The international acts include Gerry Connolly, Cirque du Soleil lead clown, Mookie Cornish from Canada, French clown Raymond Raymondson and British comedy duo Goronwy Thom and Richard Garaghty.
Though it’s the fourteenth Funny Festival, this year marks the twenty first comedy project, Festival Director, Eddy Cassar has produced. The initial festival dates back to 1997 with the first modern comedy festival in the country, The Smirnoff Comedy Festival.
During those early years many young international comics performed on the Baxter stage and have gone on to become global mega-stars. They include Jimmy Carr, Ross Noble, Nina Conti, Lee Mack, Adam Hills and more recently, Trevor Noah.
Trevor Noah’s ascent to The Daily Show stardom has focussed the international comedy spotlight on South Africa. “Diverse countries like South Africa breed great comedic artists and I am confident that many more will follow Trevor’s supersonic footsteps,” says Eddy Cassar.
Over the years, the local and international comedians who have graced the Funny Festival stage have left the Festival as ambassadors for the City of Cape Town and the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival.
“Most are still in regular contact with me in some form or another, or I bump into them at the Edinburgh or Adelaide Fringe Festival. They all want to return, or want to recommend an artist who would be “perfect” for a Cape Town audience,” adds Eddy Cassar.
This year’s Jive Cape Town Funny Festival, is held together by the foremost Master of Ceremony in the country, Alan Committie. Marc Lottering and Tats Nkonzo, perform every night whilst Rob van Vuuren, Khanyisa Bunu and Siv Ngesi perform for a week each.
